Reasons Why You Should Start Blogging

June 13, 2010

If you’re not still into blogging, perhaps you’re one of the many people who opted not to blog because they’re not into writing.

Most of the times a grin would flash in the back of my mind…..”They’re not into writing….but they can talk, they can read….but they’re not into writing.”

Anyway, writing articles can really be troublesome….that is if you don’t know how to start an article. But let me tell you this, majority of bloggers, even columnists, novelists, and renowned writers, would say that once the idea popped in mind and just write whatever that is, you’d be soon filling up pages and pages of paper once you’re in the “flow.”

If you’d only look into writing as a waste of time, then perhaps you better spend your time to other productive chores and work. But if you have a lot of vacant time doing nothing, perhaps the following benefits of blogging would be enough to drive you and motivate into writing.

  1. Blogging is a great way to express all you need and want to be express without the conflict of having misunderstood.
  2. If you’re into business, blogging is good and cheap way to market and promote a product or a service.
  3. Through blogging, you can share all your successes in life, as well as those failures, if you’re brave enough, so that other people can learn from it.
  4. If you want to get the attention of people on what and where you’re good at, blogging is a superb avenue where you can show your workmanship and real talents.
  5. If you’re lonely in your neighborhood because you think you’re alone or the only creature who acts, believes, hopes, and thinks like what you expect, blogging is an ocean of friends and similar person like you where you can feel the sense of belongingness.
  6. Blogging is a brilliant way of showing what, where, and why you stand for an issue that might be different from others. It is a space where you could point out the things you want to point out to set a difference.
  7. Considering that blogging is dependent on posting topics where you’re good at, it provides an opportunity to learn more from it and master it.
  8. Today, blogging has been used as means of communication too in the family to stay connected with them in a deeper level. Expressing your words in written would be appreciated more by a family member rather than in oral.
  9. Most bloggers don’t make a lot of money through blogging, however, the possibility exists to generate profit from your blogs with hard work and commitment.  With patience and practice, you can make money through advertising and other income-generating activities on your blog.
  10. I always say that work without fun is boring. Once you’re into blogging, you’ll be a living witness of how worthwhile blogging is. Positive feedbacks are not the highest compliment you’ll get in blogging but the fun and excitement to read more, learn more, and write more.  So, start blogging today.

The Basics of Web Hosting and Web Servers

June 13, 2010

Before you sign up any web hosting plan, it is but always a good thing to understand what you’re signing for and if it meets what your requirements.

If you’re into pursuing your dream website, selecting a good web host with excellent web servers is one of your key for online success.

Web hosting plays a vital role in the life of your website online. As such, it requires special attention and knowledge to what web hosting companies are offering. A reliable web hosting service must be capable to offer basic hosting features such as redundant connections for fast loading of files and disk access,  a tech support that is available 24/7/365, a sufficient storage space and transfer bandwidth, backup system, unlimited free access via FTP/Telnet, multiple or unlimited email accounts and subdomains, and easy access to log files. These basic features should be required and met considering that web hosting is the backbone of your website. It is the main machinery that will operate for your website to be available.

Aside from that ,  web hosting platform should be selected according to required operating system (Unix-based and Windows-based servers are dominant in the industry today) depending on the website functionality. Unix/Linux based hosts provide PHP, Perl/CGI, FrontPage, and very limited ASP functionality. If running an Application that requires ASP, .NET, MS SQL, SBS or Access, the need will be for a Windows based web host, usually a little more expensive.

There are types of web hosting servers that can be selected according to your needs and purpose.

SHARED WEB HOSTING –One server (CPU time, memory, OS, applications, bandwidth, etc) is shared with a number of web hosting clients It is usually the cheapest web hosting solution that is good for small to medium size sites.

DEDICATED WEB HOSTING- For large high-traffic websites which do custom online development projects,  create complex web based applications, and require a high degree of uptime and total control of the hosting environment, this type of hosting solution would suffice the needs.

MANAGED HOSTING- It is basically a dedicated web hosting  but added with technical features and adds extra services . This solution is more expensive than dedicated hosting considering that it can be difficult to operate technically and requires certain knowledge about server maintenance and system administration.

VIRTUAL PRIVATE SERVER – It is usually called as VPS and is a very excellent hosting solution for hosting clients who would like features of a dedicated server however on a smaller scale and in cheaper rates. The resources are setup in such a way that each person, in spite of sharing CPU, memory, and bandwidth, are allocated their own file system. It is safer and more secured than shared web hosting since each hosting client have their own file system so when a hacker successfully sets access, only one site would be affected. It is cheaper than dedicated hosting, more expensive than shared. This is preferred by most e-commerce sites.

COLOCATION  HOSTING- It is usually the most expensive type of hosting, however, it allows complete control of the server and its resources. If you want to add memory and storage, as long as the server’s hardware configuration would permit, you can do so. If you wan to use specific software, you can do so.

Knowing the basic role of web hosting and the different types of server related to it, you now have a clear view on what type of hosting plan you may subscribe  based on the requirements of your dream website.

Important Things that You should Know and Do Before You Pursue Your Dream Website

June 13, 2010

Creating a website is not a simple thing whether you’re the best web developer or a renowned web master. Every project, even in creating the most common and one of the easiest web pages, the About Us page, is getting a real big challenge to keep up from the web trends.

If seasoned web developers and web masters are sometimes having a hard time in creating a professional and a “revisit-worthy” website, how much more for a person who really knows nothing about website creation?

If you’re the one I am referring, you should, or let me rephrase it, you must oblige yourself to learn at least the basics on how to websites are created. C’mon, don’t close this page yet, I am not referring here of studying web programming like HTML, CSS, Javascripts, PHP, ASPX, etc. I will not also recommend learning Adobe Flash or Dreamweaver.

If you’re really in the need to have a website, perhaps for personal ad site or a blog like this one, and you prefer to have your own domain name, then you should read on.

To turn your dream website a reality and not a nightmare, the best and most important thing to do is to make a plan and stick to that plan. A good house will be built if it has a master plan, same is true with a website. Now what are the things that your need to include in your plan?

  1. Your plan should clearly define and revolve on the purpose of your website. Just like how our houses are purposely built, whether as a vacation or town house, a mansion, a simple apartment, or a condominium, a website must have a purpose why it will be built. Whether it would be a simple personal or corporate blog,  an advertisement site which could be in the form of a brochure-type, a business card-type or a magazine-type ad site, or will it be a business site with e-commerce, or an interactive community site with forums, membership, profiling, messaging, wikis, etc.  Your dream website’s purpose should fall to at least one of them.
  2. Identify your budget and your limits. If you are planning for a skyscraper, providing only a grand for it is moronic! The initial budget you will provide must at least be sufficient to carry on the foundation expenses. The preliminary expenses you should expect are the cost for design, domain name registration and web hosting plan. These three web services I mentioned are the most basic factors you should consider to allot for your working budget and limits. All other excesses, if there are still remaining amount, allot it for future expenses because only web design will not be part of your recurring fees.
  3. Identify human resources. No matter how classy your materials are, if there’s nobody to build your house, your house construction materials cannot be called a house. The same applies with your dream website. Ask yourself if you have the enough skills to build your site. Now if you’re not, then hire whether a local web developer or web master according to your budget. If there’s no local human resource available, ask from your friends for referral or make a day of googling, there’s a lot of them in the Internet. Use e-mail, chat and telephone as your means of communication.  Ask for their quotations or pricelist and compare them with each other. Make sure you ask everything that you do not know and the things you need to know currently and in the future. Read and understand every terms and conditions in your contract before signing it.
  4. Identify and provide relevant preliminary contents.  Your web developer or web master will not provide for you the contents that you will put in your website, unless you commission him to do so which might incur additional costs. Bear in mind the word “copyright” and such other related words so you don’t end up in conflicts in the future. Make sure that the contents are of high relevance to the purpose of your site. If your site is about houses and homes, you don’t fill it with golf and photos of Tiger Woods no matter you’re the president of his fans club. Remember, stick to your purpose, stick to your budget, and stick to your plan.
  5. Plan your website launching. If there’s a house blessing, your site must have some sort of it too. Prior to launching, Invite all your friends in Facebook, MySpace and Friendster(if you still have one, :D ). Invite them in a manner that they are part of it and you’re happy if they will take a visit. You can also plan for a contest, a raffle, discounts, special gifts, or something like “find the easter egg” in your web pages. This will not only draw visitors to your site, they will have the chance too to read, comment, and appreciate the contents of your page.
  6. Lastly, make plans for site maintenance. An excellent house can remain excellent over the years if it is maintained properly. That is applicable also in your website. If you want your visitors to return and revisit your site, update your contents regularly.  Have some time also to learn how to backup your web files remotely so when something ugly happens to your server, you still have you copies with you. Study also about self-SEO so your site will at least be in the first 10 of top international search engines.

Your dream website can be achieved with a good plan. Start planning your website today and save lots of your resources – time, energy, money, effort, and treasured friends – today and in the future.
